48 mm vs 60 mm Gummed Tape: Which Width Fits Your Cartons?

Compare BrandTapeCo's 48 mm and 60 mm water-activated kraft tape by seam coverage, artwork space, dispenser fit and current five-roll starting cost.

Three brown kraft paper tape rolls beside shipping cartons and a measuring ruler

BrandTapeCo’s current standard online widths are 48 mm (1.89 in) and 60 mm (2.36 in). Both are water-activated kraft paper tape on 50 m (164 ft) rolls, available in standard or reinforced paper and with one-color, two-color or full-color printing. The correct width depends on the carton seam, the finished artwork and the dispenser you will use. A wider tape offers more surface across a seam; it does not, by itself, prove a better seal on every carton.

The current product page lists a $2-per-roll surcharge for two-color or full-color printing and $3 per roll for reinforced kraft. Check the live configured price and checkout total before ordering.

Start with a real carton, not a width rule

Close one of the boxes you actually ship. Measure the center seam and note how the flaps meet. Then place a proposed strip across the seam and inspect the space available on both sides. Do this again on the smallest and largest cartons in your regular range. A nominal box size alone does not tell you whether the board surface, flap alignment or packing method will suit a given tape.

If a 48 mm strip appears too narrow for the seam or for the intended artwork, test 60 mm on that carton. If both widths fit, compare the complete applied result: closure, logo readability, dispenser compatibility, waste and total order cost. BrandTapeCo does not publish a universal carton-weight threshold that makes one width correct for everyone.

Check the dispenser before choosing a roll

Water-activated tape must be wetted by a compatible dispenser before application. Confirm that your equipment accepts the selected width as well as the roll’s core and outside diameter. Width compatibility alone is not enough to establish a fit. If you do not yet have the equipment details, share the model with BrandTapeCo before ordering rather than assuming an ordinary pressure-sensitive tape gun will work.

Make the artwork readable at its final size

A 60 mm strip provides more room across the tape than a 48 mm strip, but usable print space also depends on margins, logo shape and repeat pattern. Print the proposed design at actual size on paper and view it from the distance at which a customer will see a delivered box. Check the smallest lettering, logo contrast on kraft paper and what remains visible if a strip is cut between repeats.

If the design only works by shrinking important text until it is hard to read, simplify the artwork before paying for a wider format. A clear logo and short message often work better than a full list of social handles, taglines and instructions.

A simple selection test

  1. Select two or three representative cartons, including the narrowest and widest regular seams.
  2. Prepare 48 mm and 60 mm sample layouts with the same approved artwork and material.
  3. Confirm the dispenser setup for each proposed roll.
  4. Apply the tape using the normal packing method; record any alignment or application issue.
  5. Photograph the closed cartons and compare seam coverage, logo readability and material use.
  6. Approve a width only for the cartons and setup actually checked. Revisit the choice if your boxes, artwork or equipment change.

A sample check helps you make a decision for your operation; it is not a universal performance certification. BrandTapeCo currently supplies only 48 mm and 60 mm widths; other widths are not available, even by custom quotation. If neither width fits your carton or equipment, do not order on the assumption that a wider roll can be supplied.

Both standard online widths come on 50 m rolls. If you need a different roll length, contact the sales team to discuss feasibility and obtain an order-specific quotation before ordering. A bespoke short run can cost substantially more than the standard five-roll online configuration, so do not assume that ordering just one nonstandard roll will be cheaper.

Frequently asked questions

Is 60 mm always stronger than 48 mm?

No universal strength conclusion follows from width alone. Material construction, carton surface, application and handling conditions also matter. Compare the actual configurations on your cartons.

Does reinforced kraft replace the need to choose a width?

No. Reinforcement and width are separate choices. Discuss the carton, packed weight and shipping route when selecting material, then check width and application separately.

Can I order 72 mm or another custom width?

No. BrandTapeCo currently offers custom-printed tape only in 48 mm and 60 mm widths. A 72 mm roll or any other width is not available as an online or made-to-order option at this time.

See the live product configuration for current prices and options. If you need a nonstandard roll length, bring a carton photo, seam measurements, artwork and dispenser model when asking the sales team whether a separate production run is possible.

Once the seam and logo size are checked, compare the available 48 mm and 60 mm choices on the custom water-activated tape product page. Other widths are not currently offered.
