If a water-activated tape seal lifts, wrinkles or varies between packing stations, do not change several variables at once. First record where the problem appears: on one carton, at one dispenser, with one operator, or across the whole process. Then compare a representative good seal with an affected one using the same board and tape construction.
Make a useful issue record
Write down the carton supplier or board type, filled weight, tape material and width, roll identification, dispenser model, station, operator, application time and the exact location of the visible problem. A photo of the whole seam and a close-up of the affected area are more useful than “tape does not stick.” Record storage or handling conditions if they changed.
| What you observe | First checks to make | What to avoid assuming |
|---|---|---|
| Seal lifts at one section of the seam | Compare the board surface, seam fold, placement and wetting along the full strip. | That a wider tape automatically fixes an application problem. |
| Wrinkles or misalignment | Check how the tape feeds, cuts and is placed over the actual carton edge. | That the tape construction alone caused the wrinkle. |
| Different results by station or shift | Compare dispenser condition, operator sequence, carton batch and training record. | That one successful station proves the entire process is controlled. |
| New problem after a box change | Test the new board or seam against the previously approved carton. | That a prior trial covers every corrugated surface. |
Check one variable at a time
- Carton and seam: inspect dust, coating, crushed edges, folds and changes in board source. Keep a sample of a carton that sealed acceptably for comparison.
- Dispenser and activation: follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and settings. Check feed, cutting and water-delivery components; do not use a water amount or speed from a generic article as a universal setting.
- Placement: observe whether the strip is centered and pressed consistently over the full seam. Check where the tape crosses an edge or label.
- Material and width: only after the process check, compare kraft with reinforced kraft or 48 mm with 60 mm on equivalent cartons. Do not offer a third custom width: 72 mm and other widths are unavailable.
- Repeat the trial: change a single factor, record the result and have the packing lead approve the updated station instruction before rollout.
The application test guide provides a controlled trial format. The dispenser maintenance checklist helps assign equipment checks, but use your machine’s manual for the actual service procedure.
When to contact the supplier
Send the issue record, clear carton photos, the affected roll identification, chosen width, dispenser model and a description of the attempted checks. Ask for a product-specific review if the problem persists on controlled samples. Do not claim a universal adhesive defect or a guaranteed fix from one observation.
For an order, BrandTapeCo’s standard online custom configuration is 48 mm or 60 mm wide, 50 m per roll, with at least five rolls per design and color configuration. Different roll lengths require a sales feasibility review and separate written quote and may not be available. Review the current product options before requesting a changed specification.
