Choose between kraft and reinforced kraft water-activated tape by testing the seal on the carton you actually ship. Reinforcement is a construction difference, not a published universal load rating: a heavier box does not by itself prove that one option will work, and a lighter box does not prove the other is sufficient. Keep the filled box, board, application method and handling route the same when comparing candidates.
What is the practical difference?
BrandTapeCo offers a kraft-paper option and a reinforced kraft-paper option for custom water-activated tape. The reinforced construction includes reinforcing material in addition to the kraft-paper base. This article does not assign either product a certified weight capacity, a guaranteed tamper result or a universal adhesion value. Those would require product-specific evidence and a defined test method.
| Decision point | Kraft paper | Reinforced kraft paper |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Paper-based tape without the reinforced construction. | Paper-based tape with reinforcement. |
| Where to start | A candidate for a representative carton trial when reinforcement is not specified. | A candidate when the carton, handling route or internal specification calls for comparing a reinforced construction. |
| What still needs checking | Seal application, board surface, seam coverage, dispenser compatibility and observed results on the real filled box. | |
Run a fair comparison on real boxes
- Define the carton. Record box dimensions, board source, filled weight, seam shape, inserts and the shipping route. Use the same carton type for both candidates.
- Select an offered width. Custom printed tape is available in 48 mm and 60 mm only. Lay both widths across the actual seam if width is undecided; check edge overlap and the dispenser before ordering. Other widths, including 72 mm, are not offered.
- Control the application. Use the same dispenser, activation process and trained packing step for each comparison. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions rather than guessing a water amount or setting.
- Inspect and record. Note whether the tape fed and cut cleanly, lay flat over the seam, and showed any visible lifting or other issue under the conditions relevant to your operation. Photograph the carton and write down when each observation was made.
- Decide and document. Keep the selected material, width, artwork proof, carton sample and observed exceptions together. Repeat the check if the board, equipment, packing method or route changes materially.
For the width check, use the more detailed carton seam coverage guide. For a controlled application trial, use the water-activated tape application test.
Ordering boundaries that should not be guessed
BrandTapeCo’s standard online custom tape roll is 50 m, with at least five rolls per design and color configuration. The current custom widths are 48 mm and 60 mm. If you need a different roll length, contact sales for a feasibility assessment and separate written quote; availability is not guaranteed. A bespoke single roll may cost more than the total price of five standard rolls. Do not assume an unverified price, production date, performance certification or color match from this material comparison.
Which option should you request?
If your main question is whether reinforcement is necessary, request a comparison on your real filled cartons rather than choosing from a photograph. If your specification already requires reinforced construction, state that requirement in the enquiry and still test the application. If the regular kraft option meets the documented carton and process check, keep that result in the approval record; do not make a broader performance claim from one sample.
See the current custom water-activated tape product page for the offered configurations and live order details, or send the carton and artwork details to sales for review.
