One tape specification can simplify a mixed-carton packing line, but only if it seals every box in the defined range. Start with the smallest and largest regular cartons and any unusual seam. Compare BrandTapeCo’s two available custom widths—48 mm and 60 mm—on those boxes before approving the artwork or roll order. No 72 mm or other custom width is offered.
Map the carton range, not every SKU
Group products by the outer shipping carton they actually use. For each carton, record dimensions, board source, seam layout, the length of tape usually cut for the top and bottom, and the dispenser station. One SKU may use multiple boxes; several SKUs may use the same box. The tape decision belongs to the carton and workflow, not the catalog title.
Compare 48 mm and 60 mm on the extremes
Lay paper strips of the two offered widths across each representative seam. Check whether the strip lies flat, crosses folds or labels, and leaves enough visible space for the printed repeat. Confirm that the dispenser accepts the chosen width. A wider strip may improve geometric coverage on a particular seam, but it does not cure inconsistent activation or poor placement. If the boxes differ too much, document separate specifications rather than forcing one width across all of them.
| Carton group | Width check | Artwork check | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smallest regular box | Does the strip sit cleanly over the narrow seam and edges? | Is at least the intended message visible after a normal cut? | Accept, revise repeat, or use a separate setup. |
| Largest regular box | Is seam coverage adequate on the full top and bottom joints? | Does the repeat still look intentional over a longer strip? | Accept or test a different offered width. |
| Unusual board or seam | Does the application remain consistent on that construction? | Do labels, folds or printing obscure the design? | Record an exception if necessary. |
See the carton seam coverage guide for the geometry check and the repeating-logo guide for artwork cut points.
Estimate rolls from actual tape use
Measure the normal cut length used per box, including top and bottom seals where applicable. Multiply by the expected number of boxes for the purchasing period, then divide by 50 m per standard roll. Add a buffer based on your own waste, changeover and demand variation rather than adopting an invented industry percentage. Standard online ordering starts at five 50 m rolls per design and color configuration; a bespoke single roll may cost more than all five standard rolls combined.
If a different roll length is needed, sales can assess feasibility and issue a separate written quote; it is not guaranteed. Confirm the final carton list, selected width, dispenser, artwork version and quantity against the live product configuration before ordering.
