Simple Custom Tape Design for Small Brands: Make the Mark Readable

Design simple custom packing tape for a small brand by prioritizing one clear mark, actual-size proof, carton placement and a controlled 48/60 mm order.

Small brands preparing a first custom tape order reviewing simple custom tape design requirements at a packing station

A first custom tape design does not need to carry every message on the box. Start with one recognizable logo or short phrase that stays legible on the normal strip length your team cuts. Simplicity can make approval easier, but it does not guarantee a lower price or a particular print result.

Design for the shipping carton, not a large screen

Photograph the actual box and measure the seam. Place a 48 mm and a 60 mm paper strip over it to see what the tape can cover without crowding labels or edges. These are BrandTapeCo’s only custom widths; a design that requires 72 mm cannot be ordered here. Decide where the mark should face when the carton is sealed, then set the repeat direction accordingly.

Choose what must remain visible

  • Keep the logo readable at actual size. Thin details and small text that look clear on a zoomed monitor may not survive a narrow strip.
  • Use enough space between repeats that a normal cut does not always slice through the mark.
  • Separate essential information from decoration. Shipping labels and box edges can obscure part of the pattern.
  • Check color references on the intended kraft or reinforced kraft material rather than assuming a screen color will match print exactly.

Approve one version before ordering

Keep the editable logo, intended colors, chosen width, carton photo and final proof in a single record. Ask the supplier to confirm accepted artwork format and the production proof. Have one brand owner approve the mark and one packing owner confirm the seam placement. Use the logo readability guide for detail and contrast checks.

BrandTapeCo offers one-color, two-color and full-color custom printing options, but the best choice for a small brand depends on the actual artwork and quote. Do not claim that one color is always cheaper without a comparable supplier response. The one-color planning guide helps evaluate a restrained first design.

Standard online rolls are 50 m with at least five rolls per design and color configuration. A bespoke single roll may cost more than five standard rolls in total, so compare the live configuration and written quote before ordering. A different roll length is subject to sales feasibility and separate written quotation, not a guaranteed option. See the current product page.
